Since 1985, island communities around the world have participated in a unique, bi-annual sporting event with upwards of 2000 competitors, officials and spectators descending on a host Island for 7 days of sport. Think Olympics. . . . but better !

What started out as a way to forge friendships between island communities has developed into a major sporting event of a scale beyond even the most hopeful dreams of the original organisers. Fifteen islands participated when the event began in the Isle of Man, and it has attracted an ever increasing membership. So popular is the event that many smaller islands can only dream of hosting the event due to the intense demands placed on an islands infrastructure.

The 2007 International Island Games were held in the blazing heat of Rhodes during the first week of July 2007.

The Orkney Table Tennis Club sent a team of four players (2 men & 2 women) to represent Orkney. We knew from experience just how high the level of competition would be, and this was no exception.

Despite tough competition our ladies won bronze in the Ladies Doubles competition, so congratulations to Ann and Catherine Symons. The men couldn't match that level of success but put in a sterling effort against all their opponents.
